December 13, 2011Smallwood Vies for Second Major PBA Title
Tom Smallwood of Saginaw, Mich., who won his only Professional Bowlers Association title in the 2009 PBA World Championship, heads the field of four players who will do battle in the Billy Hardwick Division finals of the PBA World Championship Sunday at 1 p.m. ET in high-definition on ESPN.
The Hardwick Division is the second of four eliminator rounds that will trim the PBA World Championship field of 16 finalists down to four for a Sunday, Jan. 15, battle for the $50,000 first prize, the Earl Anthony Trophy and the PBA Tour’s first major title of the 2011-12 season.
All World Championship competition will be conducted on a pair of lanes specially installed in an exhibit hall at South Point Hotel and Casino.
Smallwood, 34, became an instant hero among America’s blue-collar work force when he defeated former PBA Player of the Year Wes Malott for the 2009 PBA World Championship. Smallwood, who had lost his job with General Motors, had decided to pursue his dream to become a professional bowler and stunned the bowling world with his upset victory in Wichita, Kan. Last season, he won $100,000 as runner-up to Mika Kovuniemi in the PBA Tournament of Champions.
Now Smallwood is back in position to try for another major title as the top qualifier in the Hardwick Division. He earned his place in the Hardwick group as the No. 2 qualifier over 40 games of World Championship qualifying on five different lane conditions, averaging 226.63 to finish 296 pins behind leader Sean Rash. As top qualifier in his group, Smallwood has selected the PBA’s Scorpion lane conditioning pattern for Sunday’s event when he will face Venezuela’s Ildemaro Ruiz, Colombia’s Andres Gomez and 25-year PBA Tour veteran Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, N.Y., in a battle for a berth in the World Championship finals.
Both South American players are trying for their first PBA Tour titles. Ruiz, who is making his PBA television debut, qualified for the elimination rounds in seventh place. Gomez was 10th and Shafer tied for 14th. No international player has ever won the PBA World Championship.
In Sunday’s eliminator round, all four players will bowl a one-game match. The player with the lowest score will be eliminated. The three survivors will bowl another game, with the low man knocked out. The two finalists will bowl a final game, with the survivor advancing to the World Championship finals.
The four World Championship divisional finals have been named for PBA superstars who excelled in the event during their careers. Finland’s Osku Palermaa won the Don Carter Division berth. The Johnny Petraglia and Mike Aulby Division finals, which will air on ESPN on Jan. 1 and Jan. 8, respectively, will complete the divisional elimination rounds. The championship trophy is named in honor of Anthony, the only player ever to win the event six times.
A special preview of the Hardwick Division finals will be webcast on pba.com’s Xtra Frame beginning Wednesday, and a post-game show will be presented on Xtra Frame Sunday immediately following the ESPN finals.

December 12, 2011Grand Prix New York Revs Up the Action with Spins Bowl Addition
Grand Prix New York, located in Mt. Kisco, NY, is not your typical go-kart place. These cars race at 40 to 50 mph. Drivers must wear helmets and neck collars. The two indoor tracks can be joined to form a half-mile long loop. And since November, GPNY visitors have been able to keep the good times rolling at the new Spins Bowl located under the same huge roof.
Owner Jim Diamond saw an opening to bring bowling to Mt. Kisco, which had no centers then. After attending the Brunswick Showcase in January 2009, he decided to open a hybrid center to appeal to a broader demographic as well as cater to private parties and corporate events with an upscale VIP area.
Brunswick configured 19 lanes to optimize space usage and tie-in closely with the racetracks, bar and Fuel restaurant. There are 12 lanes for everything from recreational to league bowling for all ages; plus a private 7-lane VIP area decked out with leather furniture and exclusive lane-side dining. Topping it all off is an incredible “pin cloud” suspended over the main seating area, made of 670 real bowling pins hanging at different heights from aircraft cables and lit with pulsating LED bulbs.
“Grand Prix New York took an already-popular attraction to a whole new wow-level with Spins Bowl,” commented Brunswick new business consultant Eric Lindfors. “We’re thrilled they choose to go with Brunswick, and I think we did them very proud.”

December 12, 2011Bass Pro Shops on Big-time Roll with Brunswick
Back in 2005, Johnny Morris – the founder of Bass Pro Shops – had a big idea. What if they built venues to play the world’s #1 indoor sport inside America’s favorite outdoors superstores?
Over the next five years, Bass Pro Shops worked closely with Brunswick to turn that vision into a breakthrough reality. Uncle Buck’s Fish Bowl & Grill debuted inside their new Altoona, IA, location in September 2010 – the first time a major retailer built a bowling center into their stores. “Johnny loves the attractions,” said Brunswick VP of Sales Kurt Harz, noting that Bass Pro Shops was already famous for featuring things like huge indoor fishing ponds and conservation museums. “The more fun they make each store, the farther away customers come from – and the longer they stay,” Harz said. The idea is clearly paying off . The second Uncle Buck’s Fish Bowl & Grill opened in September 2011 at the new Bass Pro Shops in East Peoria, IL, and a third just last month in the new Harlingen, TX, store.
“Leave it to Bass Pro Shops to pioneer a whole new retail segment,” said Harz. “And leave it to Brunswick to be right there, innovating and partnering with them every step of the way.”

Rash, a 29-year-old four-time PBA Tour title winner, averaged 239.81 over four eight-game rounds on the PBA’s Viper, Chameleon, Scorpion and Shark lane conditioning patterns for a total of 7,674 pins and a 314-pin lead over Australia’s Jason Belmonte. Rash, who has already qualified among the top four for the ESPN television finals in the Bayer Viper, Chameleon and Scorpion Open events, ranked second in the Shark field heading into Tuesday night’s final six qualifying games, and needs to remain among the top 16 after Wednesday’s final eight-game round of PBA World Championship qualifying to advance to an unprecedented five consecutive World Series of Bowling telecasts.
Defending PBA World Champion Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, also advanced to the cashers’ round, sitting in 12th place after 32 games.
Following Wednesday morning’s final round, the top qualifier will earn a $5,000 bonus and the top 16 will advance to a series of divisional elimination rounds named in honor of past PBA World Champions Don Carter, Billy Hardwick, Johnny Petraglia and Mike Aulby. In each divisional final, the highest of four seeded player (based on their qualifying totals) will select the lane condition and all four will bowl one game with the lowest-scoring player eliminated. The three surviving players will bowl a second game, again eliminating the low score. The two survivors will then bowl a game to decide who advances to the PBA World Championship finals which will follow the same format.
All five PBA World Championship rounds will be contested on Saturday, Nov. 19, in a special arena lanes setup at South Point. The telecasts will air on ESPN on five consecutive Sundays except Christmas Day (Dec. 11, 18, Jan. 1, 8 and 15) at 1 p.m. ET.
Wednesday’s cashers’ round (and all other World Series preliminaries) will be webcast live on pba.com’s exclusive online bowling channel, Xtra Frame. Special one-day and World Series of Bowling subscription packages are available on pba.com.
First prize in the 2011 PBA World Championship will be $50,000. If reigning PBA Player of the Year Mika Koivuniemi or 13-time PBA Tour titlist Tommy Jones should happen to win the event, the PBA Triple Crown club will have its seventh member.

November 09, 2011Rash Takes Third Place in GEICO Shark Open Qualifying
LAS VEGAS (Nov. 8, 2011) – Bowling fans will be seeing a lot of four-time PBA Tour champion Sean Rash on ESPN this season.
Rash continued his unprecedented PBA World Series of Bowling streak Tuesday, qualifying for his fourth consecutive television final at South Point Bowling Center. With his third-place finish in the GEICO Shark Open, the Montgomery, Ill., resident has qualified for the ESPN-televised finals in all four animal pattern tournaments – Bayer Viper Open, Chameleon Open, Scorpion Open and the Shark Open.
Rash finished the tournament with a 3,238 14-game pinfall (231.3 average) and had games of 243, 222, 209, 230, 214 and 247 in Tuesday’s six-game final round to secure his berth in the TV finals.
“I have everything working together right now,” Rash said. “Physically and mentally I’m in the right place and I’ve got great equipment.”
Asked about the challenge of competing on four different conditions over four days, Rash said it’s all in the preparation.
“Every day is a different day and having a game plan for each day really becomes important in the World Series,” he said. “That’s going to help put yourself in a position to win and it has worked great so far.”
Thirteen-time Tour champion and defending PBA World Championship winner Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, led the Shark qualifying and will be making his first World Series television final after posting a 3,297 pinfall total (235.5 average). He had games of 226, 290, 268, 176, 227 and 268 Tuesday night.
“I really haven’t been bowling up to expectations,” Barnes said. “I’ve been way off the pace and need to get out of the block much better. It was important for me to make this show and get some momentum going into the last round of the World Championship.”
Also making the Shark Open finals were Australian two-hander Jason Belmonte, who finished second with a 3,251 pinfall, making his second television final and reigning PBA Player of the Year Mika Koivuniemi of Hartland, Mich., who finished fourth with 3,190 pins to make his first final. The Shark Open finals will be taped by ESPN on Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. PT.

November 09, 2011Rash Dominates PBA World Championship Qualifying, Earns Fifth TV Final
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Nov. 8, 2011) – Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., completed the most impressive five-day run in the three-year history of the Professional Bowlers Association’s World Series of Bowling Wednesday, earning the top qualifying position for the PBA World Championship and earning an unprecedented fifth consecutive television finals berth.

“I’ve got my foot down and going full force,” Rash said. “There are so many great players here, you can’t let up. If you think positive, positive things will happen. You need to avoid the negativity. With this (40-game) format, you have to have that mindset.”

November 08, 2011Rash Earns Third in PBA Scorpion Open Qualifying; Makes Third TV Finals
LAS VEGAS (Nov. 7, 2011) – International players continued to make an impact at the World Series of Bowling as Dom Barrett of England earned top-qualifier honors in the PBA Scorpion Open Monday at the South Point Bowling Center.
Barrett bowled a 3,264 14-game pinfall total (233.1 average) with the help of a 1,453 six-game block on games of 248, 277, 210, 241, 178 and 299 in the final round.
Barrett will be joined by PBA Tour titlist Dave Wodka of Henderson, Nev., four-time Tour titlist Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill. and 13-time Tour winner Patrick Allen of Baltimore in the Scorpion Open ESPN Eliiminator finals which will be taped at 6 p.m. PT on Nov. 18.
Barrett, who currently ranks fifth on the European Bowling Tour points list, won his first PBA title in a regional tournament in Reno last weekend on his way to the World Series.
“I came here to win one of these tournaments,” said Barrett, who is also third in PBA World Championship qualifying. “Winning the regional gave me a lot of confidence. This is going to be my first (PBA) show and I couldn’t be happier.
“The key to my success so far has been taking advantage of every minute of practice time I’ve had since I’ve been here to work on everything from making adjustments to selecting the right ball.”
Rash earned his third straight television final, and fortified his lead after 24 games of PBA World Championship qualifying.
Rash, who has already qualified for the ESPN televised finals of the Bayer Viper Open and Chameleon Open, had a 1,870 eight-game pinfall (233.7 average) in the morning qualifying round.
“Having already made two TV shows helps loosen up your arm swing,” he added. “I’ve bowled well in all three World Series events and the All-In Showdown. All you ever want to do is give yourself a chance to win. If you give yourself enough chances, you’ll win and that’s what I’m trying to do.”With the conclusion of Monday’s eight-game Scorpion qualifying round, the fourth and final animal pattern is tomorrow’s GEICO Shark Open. After the Shark round, the top 53 players based on 32 games will advance to Wednesday’s eight-game PBA World Championship cashers round. After a total of 40 games, the top 16 players will advance to the ESPN-televised elimination finals in the first PBA major championship of the season.

November 06, 2011Rash Finishes Third in PBA Chameleon Open Qualifying
LAS VEGAS (Nov. 6, 2011) – International twin-grip players Jason Belmonte of Australia and Osku Palermaa of Finland took the top two spots after qualifying in the Professional Bowlers Association Chameleon Open Sunday at South Point Bowling Center.
Belmonte and Palermaa, the only players to have won a PBA Tour title using a two-handed delivery, will advance to the Chameleon Open televised finals which will be taped by ESPN at 3 p.m. on Nov. 18.
After 14 games of qualifying in the second tournament of the PBA World Series of Bowling, Belmonte, whose PBA title came in the 2009 Bowling Foundation Long Island Open, led with a 3,308 pinfall total (236.2 average). Palermaa, who won last season’s GEICO Shark Championship, finished second with 3,292.
“I was bowling scared yesterday, like I was afraid to make errors which caused more errors,” said Belmonte of his disappointing 75th place performance in Saturday’s Bayer Viper Open. “I was too cautious and I had to make sure to come out more aggressive today.
“Today was a new day and generally I had more confidence. Any time I got into a lull or I was cruising I just kept reminding myself not to bowl scared—just grab the ball and get it. This is a huge confidence builder for the rest of the tournament.”
Also advancing to the Chameleon TV finals were four-time PBA Tour champion Sean Rash in third, with a 3,267 total, and Ildemaro Ruiz of Venezuela in fourth with 3,183 pins. It will be the second consecutive TV finals for both players who also qualified for the Bayer Viper Open finals.
With Rash and Belmonte in the Chameleon finals, a re-match is possible from their emotional “bottlegate” confrontation during the GEICO PBA Team Shootout in June in Chicago. Both players will also go head-to-head in the World Bowling Tour finals which is also part of the World Series of Bowling lineup.
The Chameleon Open is the second leg in the PBA World Championship. In addition to competing for a spot in the Chameleon Open finals, all World Series of Bowling competitors will bowl two more eight-game qualifying rounds in the PBA’s Scorpion and Shark tournaments over the next two days to qualify for the eight-game PBA World Championship cashers round.
The top 16 players after 40 games will then advance to the World Championship ESPN-taped divisional finals scheduled for Nov. 19 starting at 10:30 a.m.

November 05, 2011Rash Qualifies Third in PBA Bayer Viper Open
LAS VEGAS (Nov. 5, 2011) – Hoping for his third Professional Bowlers Association Tour title, Mike Fagan of Dallas, led an international field of four players Saturday who advanced to the televised finals of the PBA Bayer Viper Open at South Point Lanes.
After 14 games of qualifying in the first tournament of the PBA World Series of Bowling, Fagan had a 3,393 pinfall (242.3 average). In Saturday’s final six-game round he bowled games of 209, 237, 246, 279, 237 and 269.
Fagan finished 90 pins ahead of second-place finisher Stuart Williams of England, who had a 3,303 pinfall. Four-time PBA Tour winner Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., finished third with 3,261 and Ildemaro Ruiz of Venezuela rounded out the top four with 3,240.
“I had some momentum coming into the final round and was able to get into cruise control,” said Fagan. “It’s nice to be the tournament leader but you still have to win when it counts on TV.”
Williams, whose previous best Tour finish was sixth in the 2009 PBA Cheetah Championship, felt he could capitalize on the Viper lane condition especially in Saturday’s final qualifying round.
“My goal was to stay steady for the whole round and hope to maybe catch a couple pairs where I could shoot a big game to vault up the standings and that’s pretty much what happened in that round,” said Williams.
The Bayer Viper Open is the opening event of the 2011-12 PBA Tour season, and the first leg in the PBA World Championship. In addition to competing for a spot in the Viper Championship televised finals which will be taped by ESPN at 1 p.m. PT Nov. 18, all World Series of Bowling competitors will bowl three more eight-game qualifying rounds in the PBA’s Chameleon, Scorpion and Shark tournaments over the next three days to qualify for the PBA World Championship cashers round.

November 03, 2011Judy Soutar Retiring After More Than 50 Years with Brunswick
At the end of the 2012 Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Senior Tour, Judy Soutar will be saying good-bye to her fellow bowlers, proprietors and friends after more than 50 years in bowling.
In her 52 years in the sport, Soutar bowled as a Brunswick pro bowler for 30 years on the Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA) tour. She then extended that to 22 additional years as the Brunswick Senior tour representative, including five years on the PWBA tour. Soutar has plans to contribute her knowledge by continuing to promote the sport of bowling, especially with women and seniors.
In 2010, Soutar celebrated her 50th year with Brunswick, where she was honored during the International Bowl Expo in Las Vegas and presented with a crystal bowling pin, as a token of the company’s appreciation. In front of a crowd of family, friends and fellow bowlers, Soutar thanked Brunswick for allowing her the opportunities and experiences she was able to achieve during her journey. The 50th year celebration with Brunswick was one of her most memorable accomplishments. “Brunswick has given me the opportunity to pursue my career from the age of 16, and has supported me for 50 years,” said Soutar.
“Judy will truly be missed by her Brunswick family,” said Brent Perrier, president Brunswick Bowling Products. “She is a true pioneer for women and senior bowlers, and we can’t thank her enough for the support she has provided Brunswick, our bowlers, and our industry over the years.”
Soutar, Bradenton, Fla., began bowling at the age of four at her father’s bowling center in Kansas City, Mo. Growing up, her father had a big impact as her mentor and teacher on Soutar’s success. He taught her the techniques and mental aspect of bowling until she turned 16 and joined the Professional Women’s Bowlers Association (PWBA) and Brunswick Pro Staff in December 1960. Remembering her early years getting started in the sport, Soutar said she was fortunate because she was both embraced early by her peers and also had Brunswick as her support system.
Soutar has experienced many changes throughout her 50-plus-year bowling career. “When I was on the ladies’ tour in the ‘60s, I would go to tournaments with three balls – one for oily lane conditions, one for dry lane conditions, and a spare ball, “ she said. “Spare shooting was a premium, as it was very difficult to string strikes. I was the high average on the tour with 200 to 202 in the early ’70s, and today, I would have to learn the modern game with equipment, technology, lane surfaces, pins, and the technical support from product specialists,” she said.
Soutar earned more than $190,000 in career earnings, eight national titles, including the Women’s International Bowling Congress (WIBC) Queens, and several awards, including induction into the WIBC (now United States Bowling Congress) Hall of Fame in 1976 for superior performance at the age of 31.
Soutar’s list of other titles and awards includes:
• Highest game series: 787
• Three-time WIBC All American
• Only back-to-back USBC Doubles Champion (with partner Gloria Bouvia) 1969 and 1970
• Kansas City, Mo., Hall of Fame – 1980
• PWBA Hall of Fame – 1987
• Missouri Hall of Fame – 1989
• PWBA Star of Tomorrow – 1973
• Bowler of the Year – 1973 & 1975
• USBC Team and All Events – 1974

October 26, 2011Brunswick Signs Walter Ray Williams Jr. to Pro Staff
Hall of Famer and professional bowling all-time leading title winner, Walter Ray Williams, Jr., has joined the Brunswick Pro Staff. Williams joins an elite team of bowlers representing Brunswick on the Professional Bowlers Association Tour (PBA): Parker Bohn III, Ryan Ciminelli, Chris Loschetter, Sean Rash, and Tom Smallwood.
Williams has racked up a total of 85 career PBA 300 games. He has enjoyed many titles so far in his career with 39 standard titles, eight major titles and two senior titles. He holds the highest average of 229.56 in the 2011 senior season. Williams has a long list of career achievements. The most notable was the 2009-10 season where he swept every major statistical category. By winning two titles, that brought him to the record, all-time career titles of 47 and seventh Player of the Year honor. That season also brought Williams’ career earnings threshold to over $4 million, the first and only player to hold that honor. He won at least one PBA Tour title in 17 consecutive seasons (1993 through 2009-10), which is also a record.
Williams, who has been named PBA Player of the Year a record seven times, has been a member of the PBA for more than 30 years and says winning 47 PBA tour titles is the accomplishment he is most proud of.
“It’s nice to be back with Brunswick,” said Williams. “It is also great to know that they have confidence in me to be a part of their team. So far, I’ve bowled very well with all of the Brunswick balls I’ve been using. I have had the highest average in my last 3 PBA tournaments using Brunswick balls and am looking forward to continue great bowling with them.” Williams was a Brunswick Pro Staff member from early 1995 to late December 2000.

October 17, 2011Revenues Heading Up, Up, Up At Latitude 30
With decades of experience in real estate, investment banking and more, Latitudes Global partners Brent Brown and Damon Brush sure know the way to a successful business venture.
Their latest is Latitude 30, a dazzling multi-entertainment complex they opened in Jacksonville, FL in Dec. 2010. Latitude 30 bills itself as “one location, endless possibilities,” offering 20 lanes of boutique bowling plus an upscale restaurant, vibrant dance club & bar, redemption arcade, dine-in HD theater, and Vegas-style comedy/live music theater all under one roof.
Next up is Latitude 39, which closely mirrors the original location’s concept and offerings, now being built in Indianapolis, IN. The blitz is on to open Latitude 39 during the 4th quarter of 2011, in time to get in on the action for Super Bowl XLVI being held in Indy on Feb. 5, 2012. And just for good measure, the group also plans to open Latitude 42 in Pittsburgh, PA in late 2012.
Brunswick is proud to be in on the ground level with these venues. Through our alliance business partner Trifecta Management, we’ve been involved in everything from concept development to construction, as well as being the primary supplier of bowling equipment and furnishings. “Each location presents its own challenges since all three started with existing buildings that have posts or elevations that don’t always make life easy,” noted Eric Lindfors, New Business Consultant for Brunswick Bowling. (The Jacksonville location was formerly a Toys R Us, while the Indy location was a multiplex cinema.) “But we like challenges. And we love working with people like Brent and Damon who are so good at seeing around obstacles to create exciting new businesses,” Lindfors added.

October 10, 2011Future Success of Bowling is in the Younger Demographics
The popularity of bowling continues to increase each year, partially due to a younger demographic gravitating to the sport. Students, for example, find bowling a fun and inexpensive form of casual entertainment. However, there is also a growing trend among high school and college students joining competitive bowling. In 2010, a record number of students competed in bowling tournaments.
The United States Bowling Congress (USBC) reports over 50,000 high school and 3,500 college athletes competed in bowling tournaments in 2010.
According to the Bowling Proprietors Association of America (BPAA), the bowling industry’s trade association, as of 2010 high school bowling had seen double-digit growth in five of its last eight seasons, and the number of varsity bowlers has more than doubled within the past decade. In 2010, 47 states recognized bowling on the high school varsity or club level – a drastic increase from 20 states in 2002. During the 2010-2011 bowling season, there was a record number of participants at the varsity level. As a result of the popularity in bowling among students, many colleges now offer bowling scholarships through the NCAA.
“Bowling has become quite popular as a competitive sport among high school and college students, as we have seen trends change drastically to include bowling as a varsity sport. Many bowling centers helped nurture this growth by creating youth-oriented leagues to spark an interest in student bowlers and create a passion for bowling at a young age. This forward-thinking concept created a new generation of bowlers that will continue to impact the popularity of bowling in years to come,” says Gary Smith of Brunswick.
In 2010, the USBC created the Youth Education Services (YES) Fund. YES initially began developing a sports model for bowlers 12 years of age and older. This specially-designed program involves testing team-based competitions, development of training and recruitment programs which targets the younger demographic. “Brunswick is proud to be a part of the YES Fund industry initiative. It is great to see companies make an investment into the future of our industry as we work together to create a more positive experience for our youth bowlers,” states Brian Graham, Brunswick Consumer Products.

August 08, 2011Brunswick Outfits New Indoor Fun Center in the Heart of Outdoors Wonderland
By and large, people come to little Rangeley, Maine (full-time population just north of 1,000), to revel in its abundant outdoor recreations that range from amazing fishing and boating in warmer months to snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in winter. But entrepreneur Nancy Bessey recognized an opportunity to give all these fun-seekers an indoor and nighttime entertainment option to boot. So she sat down with Hank Harris of Brunswick Build-to-Bowl in 2010 to begin planning the area’s newest attraction.
Her Moose Alley bowling and family entertainment center opened in May 2011. The ten-lane center also houses a three-table billiards room with shuffleboard and darts, a prize redemption arcade, a private party room for gatherings of up to 50 people, and an extensive Snack Bar with full bar and specialties including flatbread pizzas and signature sandwiches. Moose Alley offers fun for all ages during the day – something that couldn’t be said for the bar that formerly occupied the space. In the evening, particularly on weekends, Moose Alley transforms into more of an adult nightlife venue with live music and a hopping dance floor every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.
The center’s interior design features plenty of nods to the region’s great outdoors, with highlights including rich parquet wood flooring, columns of stacked river stone and chandeliers sporting racks of moose antlers. There’s also a spacious indoor open fire pit area surrounded by seating where guests can enjoy food, drink and conversations.
Ms. Bessey hired Brunswick to simplify the building process while retaining complete, single-contact control over the entire project. Brunswick managed the square-footage addition to the existing building, its re-imaging and execution with the architect, contractor, subcontractors and vendors, delivering a turnkey finished project to the owner.
“Since the weather gets wintery early up there, we had to take special measures to proceed with construction and complete the project on time,” said Brunswick’s Hank Harris, vice president of design and construction. For example, the ground was covered with heated, insulated blankets to keep it warm. The roof was installed before the sidewalls. And the concrete floor bases for the bowling lanes were poured after the building was put up. The finished building was outfitted with all new, top-of-the-line Brunswick equipment, from Anvilane™ synthetic lanes to super comfy and attractive living-room-style Striking Line furniture to GS-X™ pinsetters and Vector® Plus scoring/center management system, the industry standards for reliable and full-functioned operations. For good measure, the owner also installed Brunswick Lightworx lane lighting and Pinball Wizard automatic bumper bowling systems, 9-foot Brunswick tournament edition billiards tables, and spectacular Brunswick Lanescape video masking units over each lane.
“This is just a wonderful and beautiful place where I spend most of my time now,” said Bessey. “It’s like a big warm hug that never lets you go. I love it and I’m so grateful to Brunswick and the whole team that made this incredible vision a reality.”

July 21, 2011Bass Pro Shops Reels ‘Em In With Amazing Undersea Bowling Experience
Bass Pro Shops has always thought way outside the big-box retail store. Here, you can fish in an indoor pond. Sharpen your bow-hunting skills at archery classes. Even learn GPS orienteering to find your way through Bass Pro Shops sprawling outdoors supercenters, which draw over three million visitors a year each. With the 2010 opening of its store in Altoona, Iowa, Bass Pro Shops took a deep dive into bowling as well.
Uncle Buck’s Fish Bowl & Grill is a “fin-tastic” 12-lane in-store bowling center and theme restaurant. From coral reef painted walls to shark- and alligator-head ball returns, every detail simulates bowling in a giant aquarium. Brunswick worked with Bass Pro Shops to supply the right gear to pull this ambitious concept off, starting with custom Lanescape lanes swimming with deep-sea imagery.
“Bass Pro Shops are visionaries at using attractions to draw people into their stores,” said Brunswick VP of Sales Kurt Harz. Uncle Bucks Fish Bowl has proven so successful that Bass Pro Shops is planning to build these unique centers into future stores, starting with the Peoria, IL and Harlingen, TX stores opening in 2011. It’s all to get more people into the great outdoors…because that’s just how these guys roll.

July 06, 2011Lucky Jack’s Receives Brunswick Center of Excellence Award
Lucky Jack’s of Traverse City, Mich., has parlayed 50 years of success as a traditional bowling center into something much bigger and more lucrative by turning itself into a full-blown family entertainment center. This family-owned business, long known as Timber Lanes with 40 lanes of bowling, recently transformed itself into a first-class hybrid family entertainment center. One lane was removed to build a wall, creating an 8 lane VIP or boutique bowling room, while six lanes were removed to create a fun and exciting redemption arcade. Party rooms, bumper cars, laser tag and a laser maze were also added, and the lounge and billiard area were completely renovated.
Creating Lucky Jack’s was a bold move for owners Dave and Mike Mohrhardt, who are brothers and sons of the original proprietors, along with Mike’s son Chris, who is also a partner. The investment is paying off handsomely as Lucky Jack’s has become a major recreation hub that draws customers from across northern Michigan. Most recently, the center’s impressive transformation has earned it the prestigious Brunswick Center of Excellence Award for 2011.
Each year, Brunswick singles out the Center of Excellence award winner among bowling-based entertainment centers that demonstrate an exemplary blend of cutting-edge planning and design, business-critical general management and operations, effective marketing and sales strategies, and superior customer service. Lucky Jack’s was a clear winner of the award for 2011, thanks to its exceptional performance against all of the Center of Excellence criteria.
This isn’t the first time that Brunswick has held up Lucky Jack’s as an example of excellence, either. The center was recently featured at the Brunswick Showcase held in Portland, Ore. – a forum for proprietors that are considering modernizing their centers to keep up with the changing entertainment appetites of today’s consumers.
Recent years have seen a shift from traditional bowling centers to upscale boutique centers and family entertainment centers that offer a wider range of amusements in one place. Lucky Jack’s exemplifies the family entertainment concept and is reaping the rewards accordingly. With bragging rights to the region’s only bumper cars, largest arcade (including a walk-through redemption store), best laser tag (including the area’s only Laser Maze course), eight billiard tables and the 300 Club – an upscale lounge with private bar, eight bowling lanes and lane-side wait service – Lucky Jack’s truly offers something fun for everyone.
“We’ve had a great working relationship, partnership and friendship with Brunswick for many years,” said Mike Mohrhardt. “When we started planning our project, Brunswick furnished us contact names, pictures, plans and ideas from centers across the United States. Much of the information they furnished us had nothing to do with what they sell, but what was needed to make a successful FEC operation. They were there to help lend their expertise and knowledge of the industry. Their help saved us a lot of time and money in our project.”

June 20, 2011Brunswick Rolls Out Major Center Network System Upgrade
Brunswick will debut Version 5 of its industry-leading Vector® Plus center network system at the 2011 International Bowl Expo beginning on June 29. The update will include significant enhancements that help bowling center proprietors improve cash management, simplify in-center marketing and further enhance the entertainment value of the bowling experience. Vector Plus 5 will ship standard to all new Vector Plus customers, and is available as an upgrade for users of previous versions.
“We have paid close attention to our customers’ wish-lists and entertainment trends and have made the industry’s best center management and scoring system even better,” said Brunswick Bowling Products President Brent Perrier. “The centers that have tested Vector Plus 5 are very pleased – both for its improved dollars-and-cents functionality and its increased pizzazz factor. We’re confident the latest version of Vector Plus is going to be a big hit with our customers.”
With Vector Plus 5, Brunswick is introducing a completely redesigned bowler’s on-screen interface that is attractive, bold and cutting edge. The new design aesthetic, combined with uChoose Theme Selection and Media Manager, significantly enhance the entertainment value and marketing capabilities of the scoring system.
uChoose Theme Selection includes new scoring features that will add to the enjoyment of bowling at centers where it is installed. Bowlers can pick a theme at any time during the game and it is instantaneously displayed on the lane’s monitors. Numerous themes are available, including the new kid-pleasing Jungle Jive, Cosmic Crush and BPAA’s Bowlopolis themes.
uChoose Media Manager sports a powerful suite of new tools designed to enhance the creativity and impact of bowling center marketing. With it, owners can easily create commercials and customize almost any aspect of the scoring system using standard file formats – an industry exclusive. This user-friendly system requires no specialized computer-graphics proficiency. Yet it enables centers to create highly professional-looking promotions for their own products, as well as ads they can sell to outside businesses.
Vector Plus 5 also includes significant enhancements to the management system – perfect for centers that desire to maximize control over their system. In addition to new cash controls and management features, centers will have the option of requiring servers, bartenders and other personnel to use employee ID cards to access the system.
Brunswick introduced the first automatic bowling scorers in 1967. The latest version of Vector scoring along with Vector Plus 5 strongly reflect the company’s continuous leadership and ongoing commitment to developing innovative products that set the pace of both the game and the business of bowling.

April 14, 2011Brunswick Celebrates 50 Years in Europe
Throughout 2011, Brunswick Bowling celebrates its 50th year of continuous presence in Europe. The global bowling leader officially established its European headquarters and the entity, “Brunswick GmbH” on April 25, 1961, in the Frankfurt am Main area, where it continues to operate today. From the beginning, the newly incorporated office has had two operating divisions, one that represents Brunswick bowling product sales and another representing the Brunswick Recreation Centers (BRC) operations. Several other Brunswick offices and facilities began operations throughout Europe in the past 50 years, further strengthening the industry leader’s presence.
Brunswick Bowling Products has been present in the European market for many years before the opening of the manufacturer’s first office in the region, but the opening of the European headquarters marked a milestone in the development of Brunswick as the premier bowling brand in Europe. With a physical presence in the region, and a growing number of employees and business associates all over the continent, Brunswick quickly established itself as a reliable and credible partner in the bowling industry. These European operations allowed Brunswick to realize an even larger number of bowling center projects, including several that helped revolutionize the European bowling industry.
Pictured above left: A blast from the past: Former Brunswick District Manager, Ernst Oster, breaks the ground for the 32-lane Brunswick “US Play” bowling center in Frankfurt, Germany in 1975.
Brunswick’s impressive pioneer work included, among others, the installation of bowling lanes in East Berlin (in the former German Democratic Republic) and Moscow (in the former USSR), in 1975 and 1976, respectively. “The installation of a 16-lane center in the Gorky Park in Moscow turned out to be quite adventurous.
There was no building in place, and Brunswick was expected to deliver the bowling equipment together with a big air tent! Ultimately, we found the appropriate tent through a supplier in Finland, and installed the lanes along with the plumbing, kitchen, heating, lighting, electrical installations, etc. Brunswick has always been a solution-oriented, full-line-supplier,” recounted former Brunswick Europe, Middle East, and Africa Service Manager, Günther Levin, with a smile.
Pictured above right: Brunswick’s pioneer work in European bowling included the installation of a 16-lane “center” in Moscow in 1976. The lanes were ultimately placed inside a large air tent and this announcement heralds the opening of the facility.
The move of Brunswick’s pinsetter production to the Szekesfehervar, Hungary, plant in 1998 opened yet another chapter in the company’s successful history in Europe. After a short start-up period, the continuously increasing efficiency of the Szekesfehervar manufacturing site allowed Brunswick to consolidate its entire pinsetter production in Hungary. Today, every Brunswick pinsetter sold anywhere in the world is being assembled in, and shipped, from Hungary. The Hungary facility also serves as the European warranty center and product warehouse, thus providing quick and reliable service and delivery for Brunswick’s clients across Europe.
“The establishment of our European office 50 years ago marked an important milestone in our evolution to a global corporation. We recognized the importance of the European market very early on and made a strong commitment to best serve our European customers. Today, with several Brunswick facilities in the region Brunswick can certainly also be considered a “truly European” company,” said Brent Perrier, President of Brunswick Bowling products.
Milestones in Brunswick’s history in Europe include the following:
1961 – Opening of European Headquarters and establishment of the “Brunswick GmbH” company
1965 – Opening of the 40-lane “Heninger Turm” center in Frankfurt, Germany, one of the first
Brunswick owned and operated bowling centers (BRC) in Europe
1975 – Installation of 8 bowling lanes in the Palace of the Republic (Palast der Republik) in East Berlin
1976 – 16-lane bowling center installation in the “Gorky Park”, Moscow, Russia
1984 – Acquisition of the Schmid Group, a leading manufacturer of pinsetters
1989 – Foundation of Brunswick Bowling & Billiards (UK) Limited
1992 – Installation and operation of a 16-lane center in the Barcelona Olympic Village
1998 – Opening of pinsetter plant and start of production in Hungary
2000 – Introduction of the GS® pinsetter series
2009 – Opening of the largest bowling center in Europe – the Brunswick-equipped “Dream Bowl Palace”
in Munich (Unterfoehring), Germany – with 52 continuous lanes

Jenssen also captured the title of best female player of the tournament. Second best woman was He Kar Yen, Team Malaysia, with Krista Pöllänen (FIN) coming in third. Brunswick European Staff players, Nina Flack (SWE) and Wendy Kok (NL), came in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Over the course of the tournament, fans in the bowling center and those watching live streams on-line, witnessed exciting bowling and superb individual performances. Notable performances included a perfect game scored by Osku Palermaa (FIN) as well as the overall outing of Team Malaysia, which saw five of its eight competing players advance to the finals.
The BEC tournament delivered a new finals format this year where three players advanced to the stepladder final. The 2011 edition was also the first time where two women faced each other in the final match. Because the prize fund was over €100.000, the BEC 2011 became one of only two Platinum status tournaments on the EBT.
The finals were broadcast live on the premier bowling internet platform, Bowlingdigital.com. The stepladder finals will be shown in a one-hour time slot on Eurosport 2 television channel, with the first broadcast scheduled for 22:00 (CET) on April 14, 2011. Eurosport 2 can be viewed in 47 countries and reaches well over 40 million homes.
For the third consecutive year, Brunswick’s on-line scoring once again proved to be an extremely popular source of information for BEC fans around the world. The system recorded over 28.000 visits from bowling enthusiasts following the real-time scores, a 40 percent increase from last year.
As in previous years, the 2011 Brunswick Euro Challenge allowed young bowlers to received valuable bowling lessons during a special coaching clinic under the supervision of the Brunswick coaches and Pros. Instructors included Brunswick lane care specialist, Pat Mitchell, Brunswick marketing director, Brian Graham, and several Brunswick Europe Staff players including Gery Verbruggen (BEL), Nina Flack (SWE), and David Canady (GER).
The tournament was held for the fourth time in the state-of-the-art Plaza Bowling Center in St. Maximin (Paris), France. The Brunswick Euro Challenge is organized by Plaza Saint Maximin with the support of Brunswick exclusive distributor, Valcke Services, and Brunswick Bowling.

January 24, 2011Bowling Returns to Downtown Toronto in Style
MUSKEGON, Mich., Jan. 24, 2011 – It had been over 30 years since there was bowling of any kind in downtown Toronto. And with a location in Toronto’s entertainment district, the Ballroom is now providing bowling to the locals like they’ve never seen it before.
Once a gold refinery some 100 years ago, and most recently a dance club, the downtown building the Ballroom is located in, is in the heart of the entertainment district near Muchmusic (Canada’s version of MTV) and the homes of the Toronto Bluejays and Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Ballroom is 20,000 square feet of entertainment and spans two floors. The nine Brunswick lanes feature two private boutique-lanes that can be rented for private functions. The bowling lanes also include Vector® Plus center management and scoring system, GS-X™ pinsetters, Pinball Wizard bumper bowling and much more.
The Ballroom’s five owners (Andreas Antoniou, Paul Donato, Warren Needler, Thanos Tripi, and Matty Tsoumaris) – whose backgrounds range from filmmaking to wealth management to running nightclubs and restaurants – invested about $4 million to convert the building. They chose Brunswick because of the company’s ability to provide the most comprehensive package with the best warranty and delivery reputation. Brunswick distributor in Canada, Striker Bowling Solutions, managed the project from the early stages all the way through installation.
The Ballroom also features 52 big-screen HDTVs, seven 12-ft. by 6-ft. projection screens, ping-pong tables, a gastro pub led by a noted Toronto chef, and upscale bars on both floors. Owners saw a big opportunity in downtown Toronto, one where competition wasn’t an issue. “We saw a big void in the market, of a complete entertainment complex where someone could enjoy food, music, entertainment, activities, all under one roof,” said Tsoumaris.
We knew that other world-class cities had these, like London, New York, Los Angeles … Miami,” said Needler. “And Toronto, being a world-class city, was lacking something like this for young professionals to do.”

October 12, 2010Small business bill provides incentives for proprietors
Small business bill provides incentives for proprietors to make capital equipment purchases before the end of 2010.
The 2010 Small Business Jobs and Credit Act, recently enacted, provides valuable tax breaks for bowling center proprietors and creates incentives for community banks to lend to small businesses. Read more about why it could be the right time to speed up your capital improvement plan.
Now that the 2010 Small Business Jobs and Credit Act has been put into law, it’s a good time for proprietors to evaluate their capital improvement plan to see if it makes sense to take advantage of tax breaks such as a 50% write-off on equipment purchases before the end of 2010.
Here are the highlights of the legislation.
Enhanced small business expensing (Section 179 expensing). Bowling centers can quickly recover the cost of certain capital expenses by electing to write off the cost of these expenses in the year of acquisition instead of depreciating over time. Before the 2010 Small Business Jobs Act law, taxpayers could expense up to $250,000 of qualifying property-generally, machinery, equipment and certain software-placed in service in tax years beginning in 2010. This annual expensing limit was reduced (but not below zero) by the amount by which the cost of qualifying property placed in service in tax years beginning in 2010 exceeded $800,000 (the investment ceiling). Under the new law, for tax years beginning in 2010 and 2011, the $250,000 limit is increased to $500,000 and the investment ceiling to $2,000,000.
The new law also makes certain real property eligible for expensing. For property placed in service in any tax year beginning in 2010 or 2011, the up-to-$500,000 of property expensed can include up to $250,000 of qualified real property (qualified leasehold improvement property, qualified restaurant property, and qualified retail improvement property).
Extension of 50% bonus first-year depreciation. Bowling centers are allowed to deduct the cost of capital expenditures over time according to depreciation schedules. In previous legislation, Congress allowed businesses to more rapidly deduct capital expenditures of most new tangible personal property, and certain other new property, placed in service in 2008 or 2009 (2010 for certain property), by permitting the first-year write-off of 50% of the cost. The new law extends the first-year 50% write-off to apply to qualifying property placed in service in 2010 (2011 for certain property).
Consult with your tax advisor today to see if the Small Business Jobs Act can help you.

Brunswick now offers a Rear Display Upgrade Package, part number 47-861048-000, for GS-X pinsetters. This display mounts on the side of the elevator and is being made available to provide for ease of viewing and for use of the functions that are currently available on the Nexgen Box. Included with this letter is a copy of Installation Instructions, part number 47-902101-000, that will be needed for the installation.
Please note that in bowling centers where GS-X pinsetters were installed in the years 2000 to 2003 (Series Number 465 – 510) with Nexgen CPU PCBs, the communication circuit was not enabled. This will prevent correct communication through the I/O PCB to the Rear Display. If the Rear Display unit is installed on pinsetters with this version of the CPU PCB, a “NO COM” error will be displayed on the Rear Display. Before attempting to install this package, you will need to identify if the upgrade is needed.
To identify if a CPU PCB upgrade will be needed, refer to the following steps.
- Disconnect power to the pinsetter by turning off the main power switch and unplugging the power cord to the Nexgen Box.
- Locate the CPU PCB board and check if Regulator U39 has a black heat sink attached and is soldered on the board. Refer to Figure 1.
– If the CPU PCB has the heat sink soldered onto the board, the board will operate as needed and the Rear Display package can be installed.
- If the CPU board does not have this heat sink, it will need to be modified as it will not communicate with the Rear Display unit. - If a heat sink is not present, the CPU PCBs will need to be exchanged with upgraded PCBs. To receive exchange PCBs, contact the Brunswick Electronic Repair Center or an authorized Exchange Depot. Please note that an exchange fee will be charged for each board. You can contact the Electronic Repair Center by calling 1-800-937-2695 or 231-725-4966, or sending an e-mail to erc@brunbowl.com to receive a CPU upgrade replacement and current pricing information.

We are pleased to announce the following information regarding a GS-Series Pinsetter component part improvement.
Based on feedback from our customers and distributors, we have added locations for two set screws on the setting table chain gears. Refer to Figure 1. We are also making the metric key that fits between the shaft and the sprocket, available from our service parts inventory. The previous version of setting table chain gears did not have set screws. This resulted in some issues with stress areas between the sprocket, the key, and the shaft.
The new style of setting table chain gears went into production pinsetters beginning with series 687. The new part number for the setting table chain gear with set screws is 47-075474-009. Additionally, the part number for the newly available metric key is 11-053503-000.
NOTE: All existing inventory of the old part number, 47-075474-004, has been made obsolete and the new number, 47-075474-009, should be referenced when ordering this part.
The new setting table chain gear with set screws is usable in all models of GS-Series pinsetters.

June 10, 2010Third Luxury Cruise Ship to Offer Bowling
MUSKEGON, Mich., June 10, 2010 – Brunswick continues to bring the entertainment of bowling to new venues, helping to expand the interest and participation in the sport well beyond the bowling center. For example, the ultimate luxury vacation – a sea cruise – just got better.
How cool is it to bowl in the middle of the ocean? Because of the huge popularity of bowling on Norwegian Cruise Line’s (NCL), the Norwegian Pearl and Norwegian Gem, NCL’s newest ship will also have bowling. In fact, this new ship will have the most bowling lanes at sea, with a total of six lanes between two different venues on the vessel.
The Norwegian Epic, a third generation Freestyle Cruising ship and, to date the company’s largest and most innovative ship, is set to depart on its maiden voyage in June 2010. Six bowling lanes, complete with Brunswick Anvilane™ synthetic lanes, Vector® scoring systems, GS-X™ pinsetters and Pinball Wizard™ bumper bowling, are included in the many world-class recreational options available onboard for all ages.
Three lanes are included in the Epic’s innovative sports bar and lounge called Bliss Ultra Lounge and Night Club, while three more lanes are available for play as part of the ship’s seven decks of Freestyle Family Fun.
Additionally, Brunswick will be featured as the bowling amusement partner in the in-cabin book for the Norwegian Epic. The commemorative book will be available in the cabins onboard for the enjoyment of the cruise guests sailing during the first year and distributed during the inaugural festivities. The book also will include topics ranging from NCL’s history, concept and construction of the ship, onboard services, shopping and ports of call.
In addition to the most bowling lanes at sea and its world-class entertainment including Blue Man Group, Cirque Dreams™ & Dinner, Legends in Concert, The Second City®, Howl at the Moon and Nickelodeon™ at Sea, the 4,200-passenger Norwegian Epic incorporates many innovations including several new types of accommodations, unique nightlife, and a 33-foot high, 64-foot wide extreme rock climbing wall and the first ever rappelling wall at sea.

The following information is presented to assist customers with maintaining Brunswick Vector Plus and Vector Center Network Systems (CNS) and keeping the computers free from virus attacks. Please review
the information contained in this bulletin and if further clarification is required, contact Brunswick Technical Support (BTS) at 1-800-YES-BOWL or techsupport@brunbowl.com.
Adding Internet Capabilities to Your Brunswick System
Brunswick Technical Support strongly suggests that the Brunswick Internet Connection Policy be followed when adding internet connectivity to the Vector Plus or Vector System. The policy (current version is available from Brunswick Technical Support) explains how the hardware should be set up and the necessary steps to protect the CNS from virus attacks. Setting up the system in this manner will reduce the need to work with Brunswick Technical Support to get your system operating properly and the possibility of incurring charges for support.
Antivirus Protection
Antivirus software protects the computer against viruses, worms, Trojan horse programs, spy ware and related security threats. Licensed antivirus applications automatically update to immunize the computer
against new computer virus outbreaks coming from the internet or from applications that have been loaded on the computer. If the antivirus application is allowed to expire, it quickly becomes out of date and will no
longer protect the computer from any new viruses or spy ware that can be launched at any time. This can be costly to your business as well as time consuming to correct the damage to the computer files and operating
system.
Many customers purchase or renew their antivirus protection software one year at a time. The Brunswick Technical Support Team recommends that the antivirus program be checked every 4 months to make sure the software license is current.
IMPORTANT!: Make sure the antivirus application version purchased is for the operating system that is currently running on the Brunswick Vector Plus Server or Vector Dator computer. (Examples: Windows 2003 Server, Windows 2000 or Windows 2000 Server etc.)
NOTE: The following software packages have not worked well with Vector Plus:
- Norton Antivirus 2006, 2007 or 2008
The recommended applications all perform well and will help keep the system free from viruses. If additional information is required concerning antivirus protection, please contact Brunswick Technical Support at techsupport@brunbowl.com or call 1-800-YES-BOWL.

The next generation of fun has begun at the brand-new joint venture announced last year between Paragon Entertainment, L.L.C., a Muvico Entertainment, L.L.C., affiliate company, and Splitsville Luxury Lanes and Dinner Lounge. The Muviville Entertainment Complex is now open, offering guests the ultimate in premium entertainment options.
The entertainment center, located south of The Village at Spotsylvania Towne Centre in Fredericksburg, Va., features a 12-screen, all stadium-seated theater with 3,000 seats, including 300 VIP seats, 16 lanes of state-of-the-art Brunswick bowling equipment, 250 dining seats, upscale bars, a dance floor and a full-service kitchen offering signatures dishes from sushi to hand-tossed pizzas. This is the first all-digital, high-definition theater in the state, and includes four 3D screens.
The partnership is combining the boutique-style of bowling entertainment, and signature dining atmosphere Splitsville is known for, with the premium movie-going concept of Muvico Theaters, under a licensing agreement with Paragon Theaters.
“We’re reinventing bowling for America,” says Splitsville co-founder Guy Revelle. ”From bowling and dinner to drinks, music and dancing, Splitsville gives people permission to have fun.” Splitsville currently operates three locations in Florida and Texas, all with Brunswick bowling lanes and equipment.
“People love to bowl, but many don’t enjoy a traditional bowling alley or its offerings beyond the lanes,” explains Splitsville co-founder Mark Gibson. “We believed that a restaurant concept, focused on quality food and beverage and stringent service standards, with the addition of bowling lanes overlaid in a unique fashion, would result in a dramatic entertainment destination.”
“This entertainment complex brings together signature food choices and various forms of entertainment to create the ultimate entertainment destination for kids, families, adults, and corporations to relax and play in an environment of their choice. As the innovators of the premium movie-going concept, this is the next evolution of our strategy to bring a differentiated entertainment experience to our guests. Vector Plus CNS Operation Tips
The following information is presented to our customers with the purpose of assisting them maintain the data integrity and performance of the Vector Plus Center Network System (CNS). Please review the information contained in this bulletin and if further clarification is required, contact Brunswick Technical Support (BTS) at 1-800-YES-BOWL.
Vector Plus Data Backups
The Vector Plus CNS backs up data each day to a predetermined location on the server computer. This location is enabled in the Vector Plus Mechanic application. Typically the backup will be sent to the CD-RW drive on the Server computer. Centers may also purchase portable USB flash drives for backup purposes if desired. In addition to rotating the backup media on a regular (daily) basis, customers should replace the backup media on at least a yearly basis.
The newly purchased media will help to ensure that the center has a reliable backup of all Vector Plus data.
Checking the Backup Files Location
The Vector Plus Server backs up data automatically using the settings configured in the VP Mechanic application. The location of the backup files can be determined by checking the settings in the VP Mechanic application on the “Backup” page.

NOTE: The user must be logged into Windows as an Administrator (owner for example) in order to access this page in the application.
Checking the Backup Time
The Vector Plus server backs up the data at the time specified in the “Scheduler” page of the VP Mechanic application. These settings can be reviewed or changed by accessing the “Scheduler” page of the application
on the Vector Plus server.

NOTE: The user must be logged into Windows as an Administrator (owner for example) in order to access this page in the application.
Verifying the Files Backed Up
Log files are created automatically when the Vector Plus Backup occurs. These log files are located in the C:\CM2\LogFiles directory on the Vector Plus Server computer. The backup log file is named ‘XXXXXXXXVPBackup.log’ where XXXXXXXX = YYYYMMDD. The log file for the current day’s backup can be viewed for information about that day’s backup file.

The illustration above displays information about a backup failure that occurred on March 23, 2010. The problem should be corrected before the next day’s backup if possible.
How Does Vector Plus Do Backups of Data?
The Vector Plus CNS performs a number of processes during the automatic backup. The files are first copied to a directory on the server computer and are then copied to the removable media specified in the VP Mechanic application. There will always be the working directory of the files, a copy of the files on the server, and a copy of the files on the removable storage media (if setup correctly.)
The copied files are located on the server computer in folders that are labeled by the day of the week. The folders are located at C:\VPBackup\. Each day the CNS backup occurs the information is first copied to the
appropriate day of the week folder. These folders contain all the backup information for the Vector Plus system for the specified day. The information is then copied (not removed) to the removable media that has been indicated in the VP Mechanic application.

These folders are overwritten once per week with the new information. The last seven days of backup information will always be located in the C:\VPBackup folder. If it is necessary to recopy the files, standard Windows copy and paste functions may be used to copy the information to an alternate location, such as a removable drive.
What If the CD-RW on the Server Fails?
If the CD-RW drive on the server will no longer copy the files to a CD-RW, Brunswick Technical Support should be contacted as soon as possible to assist with troubleshooting the drive. If the server computer is still within the warranty period, Dell may be enlisted to supply a replacement drive.
If the issue with the drive is unable to be resolved in a quick manner, the center should purchase a jump drive to be used for backups until the CD-RW drive is repaired. The jump drive will be inserted into an available USB port on the server. Windows will automatically recognize the drive and the user can then enable “Removable drive on this computer” in the VP Mechanic application. Only one drive of this type should be inserted in the server at any one time for the backup purpose.
An example is presented below:

The Vector Plus CNS will now copy the backup files, at the time specified on the “Scheduler” page, to the removable drive that has been inserted in the server computer’s USB port.
Additional information is contained in the Vector Plus Management User’s Guide. Please refer to the Appendices Section of that manual for further information on Vector Plus Backups and Scheduling.
If further information is required, please contact:

March 03, 2010Andy B’s FEC in Tulsa, Okla., Earns 2009 Center Of Excellence Award From Brunswick
To make your business grow, give your customers what they want – and even more.
That’s exactly what bowling center owner Andy Bartholomy did; and it worked.
Bartholomy started by adding 16 VIB (Very Important Bowler) lanes, to his traditional 40-lane center. He also upgraded his scoring and management system to take advantage of the latest technologies available to bowling centers. Then he turned an old snack bar, party room and storage area into a 60-game arcade and prize redemption room. He added a 16,000-square-foot indoor go-cart arena. He brought in a consulting company to retrain his staff to provide the high level of service required at a family entertainment center. Finally, he hired a food and beverage manager to upgrade the facility’s food offering that would also cater to corporate group events. The transformation was so complete that Bartholomy rebranded his traditional bowling center, River Lanes, to Andy B’s Family Entertainment Center.
To recognize his outstanding efforts, Brunswick Bowling honored Bartholomy and Andy B’s in Tulsa with the 2009 Brunswick Center of Excellence Award. Brunswick singles out the Center of Excellence award recipient each year among bowling-based entertainment centers that demonstrate an exemplary blend of cutting-edge planning and design, business-critical general management and operations, effective marketing and sales strategies, and superior customer service.
“Andy took a step back from his existing traditional bowling center environment and saw that his customers wanted more. He did his research, and the outcome is an exceptional family entertainment center that is the epitome of a Center of Excellence,” said Warren Hardie, president of Brunswick Bowling & Billiards.
Bartholomy, who owns seven traditional bowling centers throughout the Midwest, was inspired to take his business in a new direction after attending several recent Brunswick product showcase seminars. He saw the success and variety of entertainment options at a Brunswick Zone® XL, and decided to create a new experience at Andy B’s that would better appeal to families as well as corporate group events.
Understanding how to meet people’s service expectations in the newly renovated center was essential for success. That’s why Bartholomy, a member of MUBIG (Multi Unit Bowling Information Group), not only upgraded the physical aspects of the center, but also transformed his staff by hiring Trifecta Management Group, a management company that provides innovative concepts and comprehensive management services and solutions to retail entertainment industries. Bartholomy engaged Trifecta to retrain his staff to ensure they were comfortable with the level and type of service required at a family entertainment center.
The positive business results are so significant, that Bartholomy is already working to select the next traditional center in his chain to remodel as the next Andy B’s.

January 11, 2010Largest European Bowling Center Opens Doors in Munich, Germany
Less than six months after the groundbreaking ceremony hundreds of invited guests came out to witness the historic opening of what is now considered to be the largest bowling center in Europe, the Dream-Bowl Palace in Munich (Unterföhring), Germany. This state-of-the-art facility, which spans over three floors and a total of approximately 8,000 square meters, features 52 continuous and fully Brunswick-equipped lanes, including an eight-lane boutique area that can be closed off with a movable wall.
All bowling lanes are located on the first floor and incorporate the most modern of Brunswick’s equipment, including Vector® Plus scoring and management system, GS-X™ pinsetters, Frameworx® and Striking Line® furniture and Pro Lane™ synthetic lanes. Also on the first floor, visitors will find a bar and bistro as well as a lounge area. The orient-themed bowling center features a restaurant, conference rooms and billiards tables on the second floor, which also offers a great view over all bowling lanes. An indoor mini-golf course and a bowling pro shop can be found on the third level. An air conditioning and humidity control system offers consistent bowling conditions and provides comfort for all visitors. Visitors to the bowling center can park in the 220-vehicle garage, and enter the venue through an impressive glass front spanning over all three levels.
During his opening ceremony speech, the Dream-Bowl Palace owner and managing director, Werner Knöbl, reiterated his desire to help promote the sport of bowling in Germany and all of Europe and citing this reason as one of the driving forces behind this €18-million project. He also confirmed that the center will host the 2010 Men’s World Championships in bowling as well as several other high-profile events in the coming years. Media representatives, local politicians, bowling officials and other dignitaries in attendance then saw Knöbl throw the first ball to officially open the lanes. After a round of show-bowling, headlined by Brunswick European Pro Staff player David Canady, all guests were able to test the new lanes as bowling continued well into the night. Later, it was confirmed that all 52 lanes were booked for the first night of open bowling.
The project was carried out by the official Brunswick Capital Equipment distributor in Germany “Hoops the Bowling Company”. Owner Jan-Oliver Hoops was happy to see the center go up in record time. “The timing was very tight, but the hard work of the last months has really paid off. The Dream-Bowl Palace introduces a new approach to the German market as it combines bowling with other family entertainment as well as with business facilities. It’s exciting to be part of such an innovative facility,” said Hoops. Brunswick Bowling Products President, Brent Perrier, has been monitoring the project’s development closely, and is also thrilled to see it completed. “Brunswick Bowling Products is honored and proud to have completed Dream-Bowl Palace with Hoops. We are thrilled to be an integral part of providing a top-of-the-line entertainment facility to the people of Germany.”
With the opening of the Dream-Bowl Palace, Brunswick now has the largest European center as well as the world’s largest bowling center in its portfolio. Guinness World Records™ has recently confirmed the Inazawa Grand Bowl in Japan as the world’s largest bowling center, with 116 consecutive lanes.

October 06, 2009Brunswick Launches New Ball Line with Legendary Bowler Carmen Salvino
Brunswick has combined the industry’s best research and development with the scientific knowledge and expertise of a legendary bowler. The C•(System) 2.5 with Chemical Friction Technology (CFT) — the most unique, high-performance bowling ball introduced to the bowling industry in quite some time — is the result of extensive research, development, and lab and field tests conducted by Brunswick Bowling and PBA Hall of Fame bowler, Carmen Salvino.
Brunswick Bowling developed the C•(System) 2.5 with Carmen Salvino’s invention, Chemical Friction Technology (CFT) coverstock. Chemical friction, relates to the adhesion between two materials, as opposed
to mechanical friction, which relates to the physical interaction of their surface textures.
According to Salvino, CFT 2.5 coverstock allows the bowler to use a smoother surface and less mechanical friction, to create more ‘hook’ where it is needed, on the backend of the lane. With a smoother finish, the ball will skid through the front part of the lane more easily, preserving the rotational energy. The more rotational energy you can sustain, the bigger the backend. The CFT 2.5 coverstock’s unique additive formula absorbs oil quickly, providing a larger strike window on sport conditions than other balls with a similar hook potential.
“The coverstock was chemically designed to have shaped molecular structures to produce a high coefficient of friction,” said Salvino, who holds multiple patents related to bowling ball design. “Because of the shape of the molecule, when the ball goes into rolling friction at the back part of the lane, slippage is eliminated and the ball will provide maximum entry and carry. This is the advantage of chemical friction versus mechanical friction.”
Introduced and used by a number of bowlers during the inaugural Professional Bowlers Association’s (PBA) World Series of Bowling, the C•(System) 2.5 was the ball everyone wanted to try. During the intensive five-week-long WSOB recently held in Detroit, Mich., the C•(System) 2.5 was used during all the tournaments.
Rick Benoit, Brunswick Pro Staff coach, said the C•(System) 2.5 was the ball to have during the event. “It was the number one, high-performance ball that everybody wanted. Once they saw and heard how the ball performed, many of the bowlers participating in the event wanted to use it,” he said. “I’ve been on the tour since 1996 and I’ve worked with a lot of great balls, we have a winner. I have never ever seen a Brunswick ball do what this ball can do. Everything you are going to notice about this ball is down lane and through the pins.”
Fellow pros Diandra Asbaty, Sean Rash and Parker Bohn agreed. “This ball really drives through the pocket,” said Asbaty. “This ball makes the sharpest motion off the spot unlike any ball when there is oil down lane. It needs a place to make a right hand turn,” said Bohn, PBA Hall of Fame bowler. Finally, Rash commented, “I made two shows because of the C·(System) 2.5. I love it.”
The I-Block core used in the C·(System) 2.5, a low RG asymmetrical core, was engineered specifically for the CFT coverstock to create maximum forgiveness, and strong entry angles with versatile drilling layouts. The C·(System) 2.5 is the first in a series of Chemical Friction Technology balls.

Note: This bulletin applies only to A and A-2 customers with American wired electrical boxes. It does not apply to customers with Japanese pinsetters with Japanese wired electrical boxes.
This Bulletin is to inform A and A-2 pinsetter customers that the Motor Overload Relay, part number 10-679151-000, is no longer available. Critical components to the original relay can no longer be manufactured by
the supplier. This relay is used to protect the pinsetter motor and electronics when the motor starts to draw excessive amps during operation.
To continue supporting Pinsetters that utilize this relay, a replacement has been designed. The replacement overload relay performs the same as the original, but is larger with different dimensions, and requires modification to the electrical box to operate safely. Instructions will be provided when a replacement relay is ordered to make this modification. The part number of the replacement Motor Overload Relay is 12-860334-000. Refer to Figure 1 in printable version.
To determine if your pinsetter uses the Motor Overload Relay, look for a manual reset button located on the pinsetter motor. This button is usually red in color. Refer to Figure 2 in printable version.
Pinsetter Motor with Thermal Overload Reset Button:
Pinsetter motors that have thermal overload protection and can be reset by the user, and DO NOT require the use of a Motor Overload Relay. This is common for many A-2 Pinsetters.
Pinsetter Motor Does Not Have a Visible Thermal Overload Reset Button:
If no reset button is visible, you may have one of two motor styles:
*Option 1: *
Motor with built-in protection that can not be reset by the user. These motors have to cool down and then power will automatically be restored. Brunswick does not offer or recommend using these types of motors
due to safety concerns.
*Option 2: *
If the motor does not have a thermal overload built in, the Motor Overload Relay will be necessary for the electrical box. Customers should order the replacement relay, part number 12-860334-000.
It is common for A and early A-2 pinsetters to have a motor without a reset button. The motor overload protection was integrated into the original Federal Pacific or Allen Bradley contactors. The electrical box cover has a manual reset button located on the outside cover to reset the thermal overload protection for the motor with these styles of contactors.
As an option, the Motor Overload Relay can be eliminated by upgrading the pinsetter drive motor to the Brunswick Universal Pinsetter Motor 12-752056-000, which has thermal overload protection built in.
Important Replacement Information
If the Motor Overload Relay, part number 12-860334-000, is required, the relay must be installed with a heating element. To determine the appropriate heating element, check the Full Load Amps on the motor identification plate. Noted below are the heater part numbers for the redesigned Motor Overload Relay:

Revised Maintenance Procedure of Cleaner Spray Nozzles
There have been reports that using the original maintenance procedure for cleaning the Cleaner Spray Nozzles has not been effective under some heavier build up conditions. In response to this report, we have revised the cleaning procedure to find an easier and more cost effective way of cleaning the Cleaner Spray Nozzles.
During our testing we tried various cleaners and chemicals and have found two that work very well and are readily available.
1. White Vinegar
2. CLR (Calcium, Lime and Rust remover) and Lime Away are chemical products available for dissolving tough calcium, lime and hard water deposits. The equivalent to these products in Europe is Entkalker.
Testing of the white vinegar was the best. It offered the fastest cleaning of the two, is readily available and is inexpensive.
The testing procedure was to soak each nozzle in the two different materials for 30 minutes rinse with water and towel dry. During the test we did not use a brush to scrub the Cleaner Spray Nozzle.
The printable version will show the three photos from the white vinegar test. The first photo is a before picture of the Cleaner nozzle. The second photo is after 15 minutes and the third photo is after 30 minutes using White Vinegar.
The CLR, Lime Away or the Entkalker in Europe also did a fine job during this 30 minute test, but the availability and cost could be a concern.
Please follow the procedure below when you use any of the suggested cleaning materials:
If you suspect a clogged Cleaner Spray Nozzle, remove the assembly from the machine and place in a small bowl or other suitable container.
Note: Before placing Cleaner Spray Nozzles into the cleaning solution, remove any residue that is in the slot on the front side of the cleaner spray nozzle using a small parts brush or toothbrush.
Immerse the Cleaner Spray Nozzles in the selected cleaning material. Soak for 30 minutes using just enough solution to cover the Cleaner Spray Nozzles. Depending on the severity of the buildup on the Cleaner Spray Nozzles you may need to soak the nozzles for a longer period of time.
Note: As a preventative measure this process should be performed on a monthly basis to ensure consistent cleaning operation of your Authority22 lane machine.
After the Spray Nozzles have soaked for the desired time, remove and rinse thoroughly with warm water. Use a toothbrush to clean off any residual material from the spray nozzle if present. See Figures 1 & 2 in the printable version.
Spray the cleaner spray nozzles dry with compressed air (wear safety glasses when using compressed air). You should be able to see through the cleaner spray nozzle when held up to a light source. Do not attempt to open the orifice using any kind of sharp metal object as the nozzle may be damaged. Toothpicks have been shown to be effective at dislodging stubborn matter from the orifice.
Re-assemble and test using the diagnostic function on your Authority22. Visually confirm that all nozzles are
spraying correctly.
This process should be performed on a monthly basis to ensure consistent cleaning operation of your Authority22.

It has come to our attention that when replacing the batteries for the Cleanworx machine, it is possible to create an electrical shock/fire hazard. The original design of this area of the machine utilized a German made, Sonnennschein Battery. This battery has terminals that sit well below the edge of the top frame and are covered by a protective insulating boot. Refer to Figures 1 & 2 in the printable version.
If you replace this battery with the China made, Narada battery, you will notice that the battery terminals are mounted much higher on the battery and can run the risk of contacting the upper frame. Refer to Figure 3 in the printable version.
To ensure that this terminal style is used safely, Sunrich has included with this bulletin, an insulating cover strip for you to apply to the edge of the metal frame so that it is not exposed to the terminal. Refer to Figure 4 in the printable version.
Note: You should also ensure that the original insulating boots are always used to prevent the battery terminals from becoming a shock/fire hazard. Refer to Figure 5 in the printable version.

GS Pinsetter Corner Belting Angle Reduction
With the changing world of lane conditioners and cleaners, we have noticed an increase in pin jams in the front corners of the GS Series Pinsetter distributor. Refer to Figure 1. We have devised and tested a procedure that reduces the occurrence of the corner jams. The pages following detail this simple procedure that takes approximately 20 minutes per pinsetter.
The following is a recommended list of tools:
· 3/8 off-angle 45 Degree Drill Motor
· 9mm drill bit
· Metric ruler
· 3/8 Drive Socket with 10 mm & 13mm Sockets
· 10 and 13mm Wrenches (Spanners)
In addition, we recommend that you be ever diligent in cleaning your green belts with lane cleaner. We have found that Invincible Lane Cleaner (P/N 62-860055) works well in removing the new conditioners that may contain silicone which has been causing many of the problems you are facing. Also as a part of regular maintenance, you
must keep the belts adjusted and tensioned properly. Finally, don’t forget to clean the bowling pins, pin decks and transport bands that track the oil to the belts in the first place.

GS Pin Slider Modification
A number of customers with GS Pinsetters containing the gray and black pinholder assembly have reported problems with pins shooting forward when they are loading into pinholder. This causes the pin to not be correctly located in the pinholder and therefore to not activate the switch in the pinholder. In some cases the pin will shoot completely forward and fall out of the front of the pinholder.
Note: Pinsetters from the factory, starting with series 459, have a new, longer slide assembly, making this
modification unnecessary.
The pin positions most affected with this condition are positions 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6. Refer to related document.

Frameworx Flat Screen Problems
In the past few months Brunswick has been working to improve the reliability and durability of the Frameworx flatscreens. After visiting several bowling centers and reviewing warranty records, we have identified key issues that MAY impact the flatscreens in your center.
These issues include: – Touchscreen Lockups – Touchworx Controller positioning and covers – Cracked Bosses (The plastic stand where the flat panel attaches to the front cover.) – Cracked Flatscreens – Floor mounted (Wishbone) flatscreens cannot be locked into position. – Loose/Broken Stop Pins
Although resolving some of these issues will require a Brunswick service call, we need your center mechanic to do two things in order to assist us in resolving your flatscreen issues.
1. Enclosed are instructions explaining how to make a simple wiring change that can substantially reduce flatscreen lockups. Please do this now.
2. Complete the attached flatscreen survey that will help Brunswick determine which issues are present in your center so that your service call will be efficient and productive.
Please complete the wiring change and survey as soon a possible so that we can schedule a service call to correct the other flatscreen issues. If you have any questions, please call the Customer Help Line at 1.800.323.8141.
